A Thoughtful Transformation: From Builder Basic to Elevated Family Living
This was a really great project for a professional couple with two kids who had moved into an inner-city infill that, on paper, checked all the boxes… but in reality felt pretty flat.
It was … fine. But life’s too short for just “fine”.
Like a lot of newer builds, it leaned heavily into bland, builder-basic finishes. And while it kind of functioned, it didn’t reflect how they wanted their home to feel.
Our goal was to take what was already there and make it feel more considered, more personal, and honestly—just better to live in.
The layout of the kitchen worked, so we didn’t need to reinvent it entirely—but it lacked any real presence.
The island was the biggest opportunity. Wrapping it in a full slab stone gave it weight and made it feel like the centre of the home instead of just another surface.
We brought in a softer cabinet colour, added warmth with brass details, and kept the hood clean and simple so it didn’t compete with everything else.
The end result feels grounded and intentional without being overdone—which is exactly what we were after.
With two kids, this space had to work hard.
Before, it wasn’t doing much. Now, it’s full-height storage, a proper bench, and a place for everything to land when they come in the door.
It’s simple, but it makes a big difference in how the house runs day-to-day.
This was about making the space feel a bit more finished.
We added cabinetry for storage and balance, and brought in lighting that gives it a bit of personality without being too much.
The mix of materials keeps it from feeling flat, but it still ties in with the rest of the house.
The Overall Shift
Nothing about this project was overly dramatic—and that’s kind of the point.
We didn’t need to change everything. We just needed to make better decisions in the right places.
Now the house feels warmer, more pulled together, and actually reflective of the people living in it.
And for a busy family, that’s what matters most.
