A Moody, Boutique-Inspired Basement Transformation
Some projects are a quick makeover. Others—like this one—are more of a long-term relationship. This client first hired me nearly eight years ago to find a set of kitchen barstools, and since then we’ve worked together to update her home room by room. Kitchen, dining, living room, bedroom—you name it. By the time we got to the basement, she trusted me completely to pull together a space she’d actually want to spend time in.
Truth be told—she wasn’t spending time down there. Aside from the gym, which we tackled first, the rest of the basement felt unfinished and uninspiring. Every time she walked past it, it was a reminder of what she didn’t like. She told me, “I just want it to feel good.” That became the goal: a basement that wasn’t just livable, but a space to enjoy.
The Vision
Her style has always leaned a little masculine—moody, layered, and textural. So, we embraced deep blues, softened those lingering orange wood tones with paint, and brought in finishes that balance sleek with cozy. The idea was to make the basement feel like a boutique cocktail lounge, but still warm and inviting enough for everyday use.
The Design Details
Transforming the basement from forgotten to fabulous.
The Home Gym
The gym was the very first part of the basement to be completed, and it set the tone for everything else that followed. Functional and motivating, it’s equipped for daily workouts but still ties into the home’s overall design sensibility. Clean lines, durable finishes, and just the right amount of energy in the palette make it a place you actually want to spend time in—whether it’s an early morning sweat session or a quick recharge at the end of the day.
The Lounge
Anchored by a velvet sofa you just want to sink into, paired with modern chrome chairs and (of course) a cozy recliner just for him. Statement artwork and layered pillows give the room personality, while sleek lighting sets the mood for movie nights or game-day hangouts.
The Bar
This might be the showstopper! Deep blue cabinetry, brass accents, and a dramatic piece of art turn it into a destination, not just a basement bar. With seating for five, it’s equally ready for Friday night cocktails or a quiet glass of wine at the end of the day.
The Basement Bath
Proof that small spaces can still make a big impact. With textured tile, a floating glass vanity, and a glowing round mirror, it feels like a little jewel box tucked away in the basement.
The Guest Bedroom
Soft textures, layered bedding, and custom drapery make it feel more like a boutique hotel than a spare room. It’s moody, restful, and quietly luxurious.
The Flex Room
This flexible space gives them room to be creative—playing guitar, wrapping gifts, or just getting things done. Hidden storage keeps all the supplies (and even the ironing board!) out of sight.
The Payoff
Now, instead of avoiding the basement, they actually use it. It’s become the go-to spot for game nights, movie marathons, and entertaining friends. She told me she feels proud to host in this space—and she’s even embraced brass accents, which weren’t really on her radar before. Best of all, she didn’t have to manage a single step of the process. She trusted me with the vision, and I got to deliver a basement that finally makes her happy every time she walks downstairs.
